Cyprus Turkish Dietetic Association

It is established in February 2006 and first general assembly and elections are done on May 2006. I was selected to the board of directors.  I am the one who is responsible from the education programs.

First aim of our association is to come together with all dietitians in TRNC and to share ideas and to defend our rights as dietitians.  Our most important aim is to inform people wrong nutritional habits and to reduce the amount of people suffering from diseases related to nutrition. Today the obesity frequency in TRNC among the children 12-17 is % 27,8 which is a high ratio. If precautions are not taken in the future this ratio will increase may be up to 50-60%. The main reason of obesity in our community is the sedentary life style and of course eating to much. Our eating habits changed when compared with past. Today Soft Drinks, French fries, KFC, Hamburgers and many foods similar to these are consumed frequently which increase daily calorie intake resulting in weight gain.

So we thought as an association we must to something to prevent these problems. In August we visited The Ministry of Education to talk about the school cafeterias and to explain the harms of some foods like soft drinks and candies which are frequently sold there. After our visit some other associations also made visits and a notification was send to the primary schools that soft drinks will not be sold. Our second goal is to make schools sell only fruit, yoghurt, ayran, milk instead of crispies, chips, candies and other kind of foods.

Further more we organized a TV program in BRT about Nutrition and related diseases. It last for 3 months once a week. I think it is helpful for many people to learn facts about nutrition.

We gave education to diabetic people in the diabetes school that Cyprus Diabetes Association organized through summer. These educations are still continuing.

There are some projects that want make in the future:

  • To prepare posters for children including fruits and vegetables that explain their benefits with fun.

  • To make researches about obesity and related diseases.

  • To prepare a child play with players working in the government theatres to explain the important points about nutrition.
